Historical octagonal temple near Castle Semple. A real architectural marvel for its time, despite its deterioration over the years. Built during the early-mid 1800's, the Temple (as locally known) is part of the old Lord Semple estate. Speculated uses include a "folly" to draw the attention of visitors to the mansion house, a summer house, and/or viewing platform.
The building became deteriorated during the decline of the Castle Semple House and breakup of the estate. Can be accessed on foot via a kissing gate along Clyde Muirshiel's Semple Trail from the Sustrans cycle track between Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan. More information about its use and history can be found on the Renfrewshire Local History Forum website at https://rlhf.info/castle-semple-temple/.
